Primary NQT/RQT Enhancement Programme

Programme Details

The Primary NQT/RQT Enhancement Programme will provide an opportunity for you to engage critically with your own professional practice during your induction year and beyond and equip you with the knowledge, skills and understanding essential to become effective and competent teaching practitioners.

Both accredited and non-accredited routes are available for NQTs and RQTs to enrol onto.  

 

Programme Aims

The programme aims to provide you with: 

  • The support to successfully engage with, and complete, your NQT induction year 
  • The knowledge, skills and understanding essential to become an effective and competent teaching practitioner
  • The skills to critically reflect so that you can improve on your own practice and make a significant contribution to improving your classroom practice and raising achievement 
  • The opportunity, and context, to engage critically with your own professional experiences. 


What will the programme include*?

  • Three NQT/RQT Conferences that will take place at significant points throughout 2016-2017 (one per term). Workshops and lectures will be led by guest speakers and experts in the field of education
  • Free/subsidised CPD opportunities throughout the year.
  • Access to teaching resources online (via Moodle and the website).
  • Student email account, library access (borrowing rights for up to 3 books) and NQT/RQT Moodle account.

Conferences/CPD

Three key conferences will be delivered throughout 2016-2017. These will take place:

Friday 21st October 2016 -  Female Genital Mutilation: safeguarding procedures in school 

Friday 17th February 2017 - Life in Modern Britain: Mental Health – supporting your own and your pupils’ wellbeing

Friday 16th June 2017 - Brave the Rage: Behaviour Management - solutions to bullying and anger

In each conference a range of lectures, workshops and critical discussion will take place. Key themes will be addressed every year, depending on school, government and trainee needs. These may include:
  • Importance of School Community
  • Behaviour Management and Teacher Identity
  • Counter Terrorism Act & Security Act 2015
  • SEN in Practice
  • Policy: Government Priorities and Directives

Each conference will provide the opportunity to network with other NQTs and RQTs and speak with tutors/experts here at Liverpool Hope. For further details on the conferences or how to book please email nqt@hope.ac.uk

As part of Liverpool Hope University’s continued support and development programme for NQTs and RQTs we are offering free twilight CPD opportunities across the days of Wednesday 4th & Thursday 5th January 2017 to our former trainees and partner schools.

The focus for the NQT/RQT events is around specific Curriculum Subject updates. These may include:

  • Latest Ofsted/government guidance for the area
  • Latest evidence-based research relevant to the subject
  • Latest updates on personal research/scholarly activity undertaken by LHU subject team
  • Latest thinking around assessment in these areas
  • Links to new resources on Moodle for NQTs/RQTs
  • Links to subject associations

Paul Kinsella, Headteacher, St Monica’s Catholic Primary School, Bootle

Date: Tuesday 10th January 2016, 4pm-6pm 

Venue: Liverpool Hope University, Eden Building, Eden 101

This course has been designed to support you in securing your first teaching position and will focus on writing your application, letter and on your interview.   

The course will be led by Paul Kinsella, Headteacher at St Monica's Catholic Primary School in Bootle, Liverpool. He has led the school to OFSTED outstanding status on four successive occasions and he has been a governor in five different schools for over 20 years, interviewing and appointing numerous NQT's.

Paul will give insights into how your application and letter, (one of potentially 70 being considered), gets onto the shortlist. He will also inform you how, once you have made it onto the shortlist, your interview answers can get you the job.

The competition for NQT posts is extremely intense and this insight could prove an invaluable aid to enhancing your job prospects.

Music Resources 

The Music Resource will introduce you to some activities which could form the basis for future work with classes.

They develop your understanding of some of the key concepts in music e.g. rhythm and timbre, and give some practical suggestions for beginning to create your own songs with children.

The musical bingo activity will guide you to explore some of the possibilities of using the IWB in music teaching.

If you have already engaged with some of these activities on the PGCE Primary course you could now work on the others or think of ways to extend the activities into short units of work.  Remember to answer all of the questions asked in order to develop your thinking about music teaching.

Primary ICT

The ITTE Association website has been put together by a small group of teachers and teacher educators convened by the DfE's Teaching Agency and chaired by Bob Harrison. Their aim is to curate a collection of resources for use by those training teachers to deliver the new primary computing curriculum, whether for trainees' individual use, for use in lectures and workshops or for trainees to use as resources for their own lessons when working in school.
