The PGCE Primary course is a postgraduate qualification aimed at high-quality graduates wishing to pursue a career in primary teaching. It is an intensive, demanding yet very rewarding programme running from late August to July Tutors are dedicated to individual student support and to working closely with our partners in local schools.

All Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses at Liverpool Hope offer students the opportunity to combine a programme of theory with real world experience. The initial professional development focuses on what underpins the work of an effective and successful teacher, while school placements offer you the opportunity to put theory into practice.

Curriculum

The full-time course is particularly intensive. Students are timetabled for study across a number of areas including initial professional development covering principles of education and curriculum areas such as English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, History, Geography, Art, Music, P.E and R.E. Approximately half of the course is spent in school where the training continues and students are given opportunities to develop and extend their skills. Both within university and in school, time is built in for students to meet with their tutors on a one-to-one basis to discuss their professional development.

As part of the course, students are expected to engage, on a variety of levels, with the course content and materials. Many of the sessions require active participation through, for example, dance and games in P.E. sessions, songs, games and practical activities in English, maths and science, and exploration of the local environment in R.E, history and geography. In contrast to this, you will be expected to have some familiarity with accessing library and online resources to support your research into different aspects of primary education in preparation for the completion of the assignments.

Formal assessment of the course takes place through observations of students' teaching, and their successful completion of assignments based on Assessment, and a data analysis and action planning. Linking theory and practice is a key feature of the course. Students also undertake a number of curriculum and wider professional-based tasks.

School experience covers block placements in both key stages one and two. In addition, students are expected to complete a placement in an Early Years class and a Special Educational Needs setting.

Initial Professional Development

Initial Professional Development (IPD): This part of the programme covers general aspects of becoming a teacher. It is largely lecture-based supported by discussion-based seminars with an assigned professional tutor. IPD develops the student teacher's knowledge and understanding of a range of key issues in education.

Experience

Successful completion of this PGCE Primary course is achieved through the following ways:

Award of Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Education - made upon successful completion of the formal subject based assignments at Masters level and successful completion of the two teaching placements. This provides a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 60 Masters credits.

Award of Professional Certificate in Primary Education - made upon successful completion of formal subject-based assignments at least at Honours level but below Masters level and successful completion of two teaching placements for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Entry Requirements

Preferably a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours Degree.  However, we recognise that the qualities needed to become an outstanding primary teacher are not necessarily limited to academic attainment and therefore exceptional applicants with a 2:2 may be considered. Applicants should highlight how their degree subject relates to the primary National Curriculum.

GCSE Grade C or above in English, Mathematics and Science (Grade 4 or above in the new grading system). These can be pending but required before enrolment

A minimum 10 days experience of observation in a mainstream primary school within last 6 months.

Offers will be subject to a successful interview, as well as a Health Check Statement and an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (formally the Criminal Records Bureau – CRB).

It is a government requirement that you take the numeracy and literacy skills tests as part of the application process. You must ensure you have passed them both before the start of the course, please go to the Department of Education website for further details.

Professional Skills Tests

It is a government requirement that you take the numeracy and literacy skills tests as part of the application process. The tests cover the core skills that teachers need to fulfil their professional role in schools. You must ensure you have passed them both before the start of the course.

The length of the tests and questions are appropriate for Key Skills Level 2/3. These tests do not replace the GCSE grade C equivalence entry requirement and you will still need these qualifications where necessary.

The pass mark for each test is 63 percent.

Before you take the tests

The Department of Education (DfE) has developed supporting materials to help candidates understand and prepare for the tests. The DfE website also has practice tests available to familiarise yourself with the tests. It is recommended that you only book your tests once you are confident and have a sound grasp of the skill required to pass the test. Book your test

Before booking a skills test you will need to register online. Applicants for ITT courses should register online. Login details will be issued within two working days, enabling access to the skills tests booking pages where you can book and manage appointments and view your testing history. If you require special arrangements for your tests you must state this when prompted when you register online for the skills tests. Candidates can apply for 25% extra time when registering online for the skills tests. For all other special arrangements, tests can only be booked by contacting the skills test helpline. Do not book a standard test online first.

Skills tests are delivered via Learn Direct centres.  The first attempt at each subject is free of charge, however, resit charges will apply.

Taking your tests

Here are a few helpful tips about taking the tests:

  • Arrival at the test centre at least 15 minutes before your appointment is strongly advised, to allow for security checks. If you arrive late, you may not be permitted to take the test.
  • ITT applicants will need to provide evidence of their application. This could be a copy of the application form or confirmation of receipt.
  • Remember to bring your booking confirmation email to the test centre.
  • Bring your relevant identification, as detailed on the ID requirements page.
  • Read and understand the test rules before arriving at the test centre and adhere to the rules at all times once you are in the test centre.
  • The waiting area, in the majority of test centres, is designed to facilitate the needs of candidates; there are no provisions for childcare. Anyone accompanying you to the test centre will not be allowed to wait in the centre.
  • When you have finished the test, your results will be available from the test administrator.  Your results will also be available to the ITT provider to whom you have applied, approximately 48 hours after you take the test.

What happens next?

If you fail a test you are allowed to resit it up to two times. If you fail the test three times you will not have the option to resit the test for a minimum of two years from the test date. Unfortunately this will result in us being unable to progress with your application.

Once you have passed the tests these results are valid for 36 months from the pass date.
